Sinful Sunday: Easy A…

‘Let the record show that I, Olive Penderghast, being of sound mind and below average breast size, swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth… starting now.’
Olive Penderghast, Easy A

When everyone thinks something about you, does that make it true? Can rumours become a reality if you give in to them?

I’ve chosen to pay homage to Easy A for the February ‘A’ prompt. It’s a fantastic movie, and not just because Emma Stone wears a lot of corsets!

In the film, Olive Penderghast embraces the false rumours of her promiscuity; she revels in her sluttish reputation, letting everyone at school think what they want of her, marking herself with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter, until this facade becomes too destructive and then she discards it, revealing the truth to the then enraptured crowds.

I liked this idea of dressing up to your critics. Taking the worst that is said about you and making it your own, even being empowered by it. And I liked even more how Olive is able to give up the lie once it stops being helpful; how she learns enough and then moves on.

I don’t really have Olive’s problem with self vs public image anymore, although I still have secrets and can still surprise my friends that I’m not as modest and conservative as they originally thought, but I certainly understand how easy it is to just let people believe what they want of you and how difficult it can be to break down those false impressions. So I thought the idea of succeeding in just that was worth celebrating!

And anyway, who doesn’t want to pretend to be Emma Stone for a while?!
