Sinful Sunday: A new look…

‘Happiness is the secret to all beauty; there is no beauty that is attractive without happiness.’
Christian Dior

One argument that I have with myself more often than you’d expect involves picking my favourite era and when I wish I’d been born if I had the choice.

It must be the Jazz Age! I could dance the Charleston and wear beads and drink cocktails all day…but no, no, the 1940s – bold red lips and victory rolls, dancing cheek to cheek. Hang on, what about the 1960s? Mini skirts, mascara, pop music? Maybe Jane Austen’s era – extravagant balls, innocent flirtations…

And then I remember Grace Kelly, I remember her gold dress in ‘How To Catch A Thief,’ I remember Christian Dior’s New Look and the angles in his Bar Suit that I fell in love with at the V+A ‘Golden Age of Couture’ exhibition in 2008.How can I resist that shape? Those curves, that hourglass. Acres of fabric, petticoats and corsets. Oh, it has to be the 1950s!

So here’s to the hourglass shape of the New Look, with a slightly sinful twist…

(In the end, however, I wouldn’t pick any other era than now – when else, as a woman, could I live, work and fuck with such freedom? It’s an easy choice!)

  1. You look amaze balls and i really like what you he to write, i romanticize the sexual freedom of the 70’s among other things but i really have so much More freedom now, besides 70’s sex, though hot. Probably smelt kind of bad

  2. I know exactly what you mean about different eras and what attracts you to each different one but this” when else, as a woman, could I live, work and fuck with such freedom? It’s an easy choice” YES, we should always remember this and how lucky we are as women to be living in these times and work to ensure that our daughters who come after us have it even better

  3. The symmetry and simplicity of this photo is absolute perfection. You are gorgeous and I can absolutely picture you in Grace Kelly’s dress (and those glittery diamonds) from ‘To Catch a Thief’.

Love your comments on the eras as well. Now is definitely best, except for maybe the dancing 🙂

  4. Like you, I’m a great admirer of Dior and the New Look. I fall in love with the curves and lines of his designs each time I’m lucky enough to see them up close.

I have a feeling if he were with us today, he’d very much approve of your gorgeous form and your sinful twist, as well as the wonderful symmetry of your monochrome shot.

    Absolutely gorgeous post… x

  5. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who plays the “what previous era should I have been alive in?” game. Ultimately I, like you, realize that the social gains made in the present outweigh any of the coolness of the past.

I’m gladder to see the accompanying image. So beautiful!
